While Rocca Scaligera is famous for being a marine fortification on a lake, a castle and an Italian Heritage site, it is also known for the ghost who haunts it, Ebengardo, who vents his pain on stormy nights.
According to the legend, there was a young man named Ebengardo who lived in the castle with his wife Arice. Their life was turned upside down one stormy night when a night who was residing there introduced himself as Elabert, Marquis of Feltrino.
Arice's beauty captivated Elabert, and he decided to own it at any cost. He would enter her rooms in the middle of the night, and her cries woke Ebengard. When he arrived in her room, he found her lifeless, apparently killed by Elabert with his dagger.
Enraged, Ebengard attacked Elabert, but was pierced by his own dagger in the struggle.
To this day, the tormented ghost of Ebengard wanders the rooms of the castle on similar stormy nights. Arice's torment was infinite, and the sad pair are unable to reunite in peace even after death.
