Old stone cross located in the old town of Rabat at Sqaq Sant'Agata.
The cross itself is not that big, maybe 1 meter, but it is placed on a 3 meter high stone column. This makes it very distinctive in the area.
The column is designed with different "rings" and the base is more like a plinth. The cross itself has a decorative small bow under the two horizontal arms.
In this old part of the city there are several catacombs and crypts among others St. Paul's Catacombs. These were burial grounds in pre-Christian times, for the Romans would not have died within the city walls. Since then, the catacombs became the haunt of Christian congregations who held services and buried their dead here.
It has not been possible to find information about the cross, but its appearance points to many hundreds of years. In several places the stone column itself has been eroded. If you take the history of the area into account, it is another assumption that it is a very old cross.
The cross is on a list of monuments in Rabat, Malta. These are also listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (
