This sonnet on the corner of Houtstraat and Rapenburg was the second wall poem installed by the TEGEN-BEELD Foundation. It was restored in 2008 in a completely new font by Bruins. And this time with the title Sonnet XXX above it.
Tribute
On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, on April 24, 2016 (at 4:16 PM), Ben Walenkamp hung a wreath at the sonnet together with the Leiden poet Leo van Zanen as a tribute to Shakespeare. The ribbon on the wreath bore the words “Sweet silent thought,” the last three words of the first line of the sonnet. Unfortunately, the tribute was short-lived: the wreath was stolen that same night, despite the fact that it was hung high and placed with a ladder. 'Disrespectful' and 'a mockery', according to Walenkamp. After a lot of commotion on social media and a phone call to the president of L.S.V. Minerva, the first-year students from the student house across the street brought back the wreath. It was a student joke.
Residents
The Leidsch Dagblad of October 18, 2003 contained an article by Wilfred Simons about the student house on which the sonnet was painted. It is a girls' house from L.S.V. Minerva, the house culture was described as 'caring'. Since the poem is about the importance of friendship and the youth that the future holds, it seems an appropriate location.
