Durham Cathedral was founded in 995AD, but this building which replaced an earlier one was completed in 1133AD.

The doorway provides free entrance to the Cathedral although donations are encouraged and some parts of the cathedral are only available on a paid tour.
The door is wooden with a stone arch surrounding it. There is a replica of a large sanctuary knocker on the door.
This was originally used in the Medieval period when use of the door knocker granted sanctuary in the church for 37 days.
