Housed in the trophy hall in Gallagher Iba Arena this trophy sits on display among many other National Championship trophies for a variety of sports. This is however the only National Championship for the OSU football program.
The American Football Coaches Association selected a panel of Nationally recognized coaches to retroactively award National titles for the years from 1922 (when the AFCA was founded) to 1949 ( the year before the coaches poll was first published).
The Oklahoma State team of 1945 (formerly Oklahoma A&M) set several records including fewest points scored against, fewest first downs allowed and an average vistory of 23.2 points over their opponents.
The Cowboys went 9-0 in 1945, finishing the season with a 33-13 win over St. Mary's in the Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately for Oklahoma State, it was one of a few teams to go undefeated in 1945. Army finished the season ranked No. 1 at 9-0, with 10-0 Alabama checking in at No. 2, a 7-1-1 Navy at No. 3 and 9-0-1 Indiana at No. 4. The Cowboys had to settle for No. 5. After reviewing several areas of accomplishment OSU was chosen by the AFCA to be named 1945 National Champions. (
