Recibe todo tipo de nombres: Plaza Grande, Plaza Mayor, Zócalo o simplemente la Plaza. Fue el centro de la ciudad maya de T'ho. Hoy es el centro histórico y de reunión de Mérida. La catedral (1561-1598), que parece una fortaleza, y la Casa Montejo (1549) se construyeron con las piedras de los templos mayas que había en el lugar. Los otros dos lados de la plaza están ocupados por el Palacio Municipal (1542, reconstruido en 1850) y el Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán.

La plaza está bordeada por altos laureles cuya sombra cae sobre los confidenciales, los sillones de piedra donde las parejas se sientan frente a frente. El aroma de las flores impregna el aire. Por la tarde, hombres, mujeres y niños pasean lentamente por la plaza, mientras guitarristas vestidos de blanco esperan en las sillas a que se contraten sus servicios para dar una serenata o amenizar una celebración. Todos los domingos, el tráfico se detiene y al centro de Mérida sólo pueden acceder los peatones. El contraste con el tráfico cotidiano es sorprendente. Es una gran fiesta familiar semanal, con un derroche de comida y entretenimiento. A las 20.00 horas, el carruaje de Cenicienta vuelve a convertirse en calabaza. Pero mientras tanto habrá pasado un día estupendo y, por supuesto, no habrá olvidado la legendaria foto delante de las seis letras de colores que forman el nombre de la ciudad.

It goes by many names: Plaza Grande, Plaza Mayor, Zócalo, or simply the Plaza. It was the center of the Mayan city of T'ho. Today, it's the historical and meeting heart of Mérida. The fortress-like cathedral (1561-1598) and Casa Montejo (1549) were built from the stones of the Mayan temples that once stood on the site. The other two sides of the Plaza are occupied by the Palacio Municipal (City Hall, 1542, rebuilt in 1850) and the Palacio de Gobierno of the State of Yucatán.

The Plaza is bordered by tall laurel trees whose shadows fall on the confidenciales, stone loveseats where couples sit facing each other. The scent of flowers permeates the air. In the evening, men, women and children stroll slowly around the square, while white-clad guitarists wait in chairs for their services to be hired to serenade or enliven a celebration. Every Sunday, traffic comes to a halt and the center of Mérida is accessible only to pedestrians. The contrast with everyday traffic is striking. It's a huge weekly family celebration, with an abundance of food and entertainment. Then, at the stroke of 8pm, Cinderella's carriage turns back into a pumpkin. But in the meantime you'll have had a great day, and of course you won't have forgotten the mythical photo in front of the six colorful letters that make up the town's name.
