Built in 1674, the Church and Convent of San Francisco are part of the historic center of Lima, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. In addition to a church and a monastery, it also contains a library and a catacombs museum.
The catacombs were the ancient cemetery from the colonial era. It operated as such until 1810 and it is estimated that at that time it must have housed up to 70,000 people. Today, the different rooms contain a good number of bones classified by type and sometimes arranged in a rather artistic manner, like those in the mass grave. Certain doors of this crypt, according to certain hypotheses, lead to corridors communicating with other churches and even with the Government Palace.
Guided tour including the catacombs: $5 US
