A famous feature of the Victoria Falls is the naturally formed Devil's Pool. The Devil's Pool experience is popular and is only possible from September to the end of January, when the natural rock walls of the Devil's Pool come close enough to the surface to form a barrier and stop swimmers from being carried away.

Devil's Pool is located near Livingstone Island on the Zambian side of the Zambezi river. This is where David Livingstone first set eyes on the Victoria Falls. To get to Livingstone Island you take a motor boat from the landing at the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Livingstone, Zambia. On the island you scramble a fair way over rocks and swim through the river. The guide will show you exactly where to swim to avoid the strong currents and rocks. You do have to be a decent swimmer to feel comfortable. Once you get close to the right spot you have to jump in from a rock, and trust that you will not get swept over the side.

A guide will tell you exactly where to jump and once everyone in the group has jumped safely and you are sitting on the rock wall, the guide will hold your ankles and you can lie and hang your arms over the edge.

The Devil's Pool is usually open between mid August and mid January - depending on Zambezi water levels.
