"Chichen Itza is one of the best known archaeological sites in Mexico. Located in the Yucatan peninsula, specifically in the municipality of Tinum, it was a Mayan city but also belonged to the Toltecs. Inside Chichen Itza, the pyramid of Kukulcan or El Castillo is one of the major attractions, not only of the site but also of the Yucatan peninsula and the whole country.
Chichén Itzá covers about 15 square kilometres and has been a World Heritage Site since 1998. There has been speculation for centuries as to the significance of the pyramid of Kukulcan in particular. Recent evidence suggests that it may have been a kind of calendar, given the importance of time changes to the Mayans. The pyramid sits on a base 55.5 metres wide and 24 metres high; each side has exactly 91 steps plus one more at the top leading to the upper temple, which, when added up, would be 365, exactly the same as the days of the year (not counting leap days, of course)."
