"Op de plaats van het huidige Hof van Sonoy lag sinds 1482 het Witte Hof of Sint Maria Magdalena Klooster. De oudste delen van het huidige complex dateren nog uit die tijd. In 1572 werd het klooster gebruikt als onderdak voor die stedelingen wiens huizen waren gesloopt voor de aanleg van de nieuwe stadsverdediging. Na het beleg werd het oude klooster verkocht aan Diederick van Sonoy, gouverneur van het Noorderkwartier, die hier enige jaren heeft gewoond. Sonoy had een sleutelrol in de overwinning op de Spanjaarden in 1573. De volgende eigenaar was mr. Willem van Bardes. Hij heeft de toren laten bouwen. U kunt vandaag via de trap (een kleine 100 treden!) de torenkamer bezoeken en lezen wat Bardes voor zijn vroeg overleden vrouw op het plafond liet schilderen. In 1744 werd het huis door de stad gekocht en ingericht als tehuis voor bejaarde mannen en vrouwen. Het hield deze functie tot 1969."

"The White Court or Saint Mary Magdalene Monastery has been located on the site of the current Hof van Sonoy since 1482. The oldest parts of the current complex date from that time. In 1572 the monastery was used as shelter for those townspeople whose houses had been demolished for the construction of the new city defenses. After the siege, the old monastery was sold to Diederick van Sonoy, governor of the Noorderkwartier, who lived here for several years. Sonoy played a key role in the victory over the Spanish in 1573. The next owner was mr. Willem van Bardes. He had the tower built. Today you can visit the tower room via the stairs (almost 100 steps!) and read what Bardes had painted on the ceiling for his early deceased wife. In 1744 the house was built by purchased the town and equipped it as a home for elderly men and women. It held this function until 1969."
