The profile of Mt. Mansfield in Vermont is said to resemble the head of a reclining man. This has given rise to fanciful names for the individual peaks such as ‘the forehead,’ ‘the nose,’ ‘the chin’ and ‘the Adam’s apple.’ Oddly enough, it’s the ‘chin’ that represents the highest of these peaks at an elevation of 4393 ft.

There are several ways to get to the top of Mt. Mansfield. The Vermont Long Trail, which extends across the entire state from north to south, goes directly across Mt. Mansfield and can be accessed on either end. The Stowe Toll Road allows vehicle access to within a mile and a half of the summit via the Vermont Long Trail. There is also a spur trail called the Cliff Trail, accessed from the top of the Stow Gondola ride, which offers a bit of a shortcut to the Long Trail just south of the summit.

For the record, we took the Cliff Trail from the Stowe Gondola. Although it’s a ‘shortcut,’ it more than makes up for it with rocky conditions requiring a lot of ‘boulder hopping.’ (The kids loved it- but I had to lift my young daughter up on several occasions.)

There is a USGS benchmark at the summit and the views of the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks to the west are great. Although there is no fee associated with the high point, there is a fee to ride the gondola or use the toll road. If you only hike along the Vermont Long Trail, there is no fee at all.
