At an elevation of 13,161 ft., the summit of Wheeler Peak, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is the highest point in the state of New Mexico.

The hike to the top of New Mexico, i.e., Wheeler Peak, is a little over 8 miles round trip from the Williams Lake trailhead at the far end of the Taos Valley Ski resort. (There are other routes to the top that are substantially longer.) The well-made trail is not technically challenging and requires no special equipment, but it is listed as strenuous (or if, like me, you’re old, out of shape and unaccustomed to the altitude, very strenuous). But the effort is worth it as the views from the top are amazing in all directions.
There is a small monument at the summit with a plaque and a piece of pipe that serves as a register, although it appears to have become dislodged somewhat over the years. There is also one visible USGS marker. See the link below for a complete description of the trail and how to access it.
