In this region there was plenty of smuggling and the customs and border police had a strong presence. Alcoutim was an open border, with connections across the river with the Spanish village of Sanlucar de Guadiana. The borders are gone, as well as the police, but this little house was kept. There is also an wooden sentry house standing nearby.
