The Swedish Railway Museum in Gävle is one of Sweden's national museums for railway history. It is the museum's task to acquire, preserve and provide knowledge about Swedish railway history. The museum is owned by the Swedish Transport Administration.
The original museum opened in 1915 in Stockholm's central station, but it was not until 1942-1945 that locomotives and wagons began to be on permanent display. The premises were not optimal and the entire museum was moved to the current area in Gävle.
Over the years, more and more train carriages, locomotives and other railway-related objects have been acquired. And that is why the museum has been constantly rebuilt.
