Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland, has a coastline of almost 15,000 km and about 13,700 islands.

Saimaa Geopark is a landscape with wide lakes, labyrinthine archipelagos, long sandy beaches with clear water, pine forests and ancient bedrock with many interesting rock formations. Castles, churches, rock paintings from the Stone Age and many memorials from wars are also part of Saimaa Geopark.

Geology, biodiversity and the interaction between people and nature are important and the aim of Saimaa Geopark is to partly protect nature and cultural values and at the same time show the beauty of the place to both locals and visitors.
Very good hiking trails, swimming from wide sandy beaches, boating and fishing are available.

Throughout Finland you have the "Allemandsretten" which means that you can spend the night in a tent or motorhome anywhere where you are not a nuisance to dwellings. The "Allemandsretten" also applies here in the geopark. However, there are also many opportunities to find a hotel, a camping site or a hostel, as there are several larger towns in Saimaa Geopark.

Throughout the Geopark, a lot has been done to inform about geology, flora and fauna, and people are encouraged to take care of nature. As a preparation, you can go on a Virtual Reality tour. (visit link)

One of the rarest seals, the Saimaa ringed seal, lives here in Lake Saima as the only place in the world. There are only about 400 seals left. You may be lucky to see it in the early summer months.
