PT: "Hospital militar de campanha, fundado na segunda metade do séc. 17 por determinação régia e administrado pela Ordem de São João de Deus, integrado na rede hospitalar e assistencial criada ao longo da raia, durante as Guerras da Aclamação. Foi instalado num primeiro edifício, junto à cadeia, e só no séc. 18 nas imediações da Porta do Sol, sendo o edifício adaptado a Quartel de Bombeiros na primeira metade do séc. 20. Do antigo hospital é possível que conserve apenas a sua volumetria, com fachadas de dois pisos, a que se acrescentou um corpo mais estreito e saliente e se conferiu algumas características da chamada "casa portuguesa", nomeadamente nos remates individualizados dos dois corpos da fachada principal, com espaldar contracurvado e empena, de cornija e beirada, na colocação de beirais sobre as janelas do segundo piso da fachada principal e portal do corpo estreito. A fachada principal tem corpo principal com a zona central alteada, formando falso espaldar contracurvado, albergando o brasão dos Bombeiros. A largura e ritmo dos vãos foi alterado nas obras do séc. 20, bem como a organização espacial interior."
