The barn is built of wood, unpainted. The roof consists of straw on which many wooden posts are placed. A very common building style on the Aland Islands. The barn has several functions, both for animals and for storage.

The building was moved here in 1958 from Finby, Sund parish, but originated from Tranvik in Sund. The actual cattle shed is to the right with stalls for three cows. There are also pens for calves, sheep and pigs. To the left is the haybarn and in the middle a room for keeping various tools and for handling milk.

There are about twenty buildings at Jan Karlsgården. They have all moved from different parts of Aland to be placed in Jan Karlsgården. In this way, you can see Aland's former building and housing culture and show environments in which Alanders lived and worked.
