The Pompeii forum is a forum from Roman times, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 and rediscovered after archaeological excavations in ancient Pompeii. The area was the main square of the city and represented the political, economic and religious center in which public events, commercial contracts and debates took place. It is one of the best preserved forums of the ancient Italian cities.

The Pompeii forum was built around the 4th century BC. C., in Samnite times, near an important communication hub, with roads leading to Neapolis, Nola and Stabiae. It was a small open-air area around which numerous shops were arranged, usually built with lava and volcanic tuff cemented with clay. After the conquest of Pompeii by the Romans, the forum was completely rebuilt and enlarged, particularly in the 2nd century BC. C. Specifically, both the shops and a perimeter wall adjacent to the temple of Apollo were demolished. Taking advantage of the low occupancy density in the area, various buildings of a political and religious nature were built around the perimeter of the square.

During the Augustan period important restoration works were carried out, between the end of the 1st century B.C. C. and the beginning of the 1st century. The paving was renewed, the portico was built, the macellum was restored and a temple dedicated to the emperor was erected. The area was buried by the Vesuvius eruption of 79 under a thick layer of lapilli and ash, and was not unearthed until the beginning of the 19th century, at the wish of Caroline Bonaparte.
