Maria Alexandrovna born Marie of Hesse and by Rhine. She was born in the German city of Darmstadt on 8 August 1824 and died in Saint Petersburg in Russia on 8 June 1880.

She was the daughter of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse and Princess Wilhelmine of Baden where she was the youngest of seven children.
Already when Marie was 14 years old she met her future husband, the future Emperor of Russia Alexander II and they were married when she was 16 years old. Alexander and Maria became Emperor and Empress of Russia in 1855 and together had eight children.


Marie was behind the establishment of Russia's first school for women. She was also very active in the Red Cross movement and was one of the founders of the Red Cross in Russia.


The statue of Empress Maria Alexandrovna is a gift from Saint Petersburg on the occasion of Mariehamn 2011 celebrating 150 years of the city's founding. The town Mariehamn is named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna.The city was founded in 1861, while Aland and Finland were under Russian rule.
