FR: "L'ancienne capitainerie du Port, construite en 1850 sur les ruines d'une poudriere batie en 1765 dans le prolongement de la Grande batterie de la place. AU XIX e siecle, elle servait à l'annonce et a la régulation de l'acces des navires au port. Le batiment disposait d'un mat de pavillon sur lequel étaient hissés divers signaux destinés à informer les navires et les habitants. Une boule noire indiquait qu'il était Theure de tirer un coup de canon. ce signal relaye par le clairon marquait la fin de la journée de travall dans les casernes. Un coup était tire a 4 h du matin la diane et un autre a 20 h (la retraite). Avant ou apres, l était interdit de piler le mil de battre les pagnes ou de ouer du tam-tam. Le debut et la fin des campagnes de traite y étaient également annonces"

"The former harbor master's office, built in 1850 on the ruins of a powder keg built in 1765 in the extension of the Great Battery of the square. IN the 19th century, it was used to announce and regulate the access of ships to the port. The building had a flag mast on which were hoisted various signals intended to inform ships and inhabitants. A black ball indicated that it was time to fire a cannon. this signal relayed by the bugle marked the end of the day's work in the barracks. A shot was fired at 4 a.m. the diane and another at 8 p.m. (the retreat). Before or after, it was forbidden to pound millet, beat loincloths or play the tom-tom. The start and end of the slave trade campaigns were also announced there."
