This sign welcomes you when you get off the Dakar-Gorée Ferry, at the pier, and enter the Island. It has an arch shape.
Pone "Bienvenue a L'ile de Gorée / Patrimonie mondial de L'unesco despuis 1978"
"For more than three centuries it was the most important slave market to supply them to the United States of America, the Caribbean and Brazil, mainly. The island was invaded by the Portuguese in 1444, under whose flag in 1536 the first House of slaves was built. From then until 1848, the year in which France abolished slavery, the most active base of the slave trade was established on this island. The house built by a Dutchman in 1776, which is still preserved, is now a UNESCO museum."

On the other side it also has the farewell to the island "Mercí de votre pelerinage / Gorée vous (and a hearth)"
