Nuestra Asociación nació en Milán el 29 de abril de 1917 cuando aún ardía la Gran Guerra con el objetivo de asistir a las numerosas personas mutiladas y discapacitadas de aquel terrible conflicto y promover los valores de paz, libertad, democracia y solidaridad. Este año ha cumplido pues su siglo de vida y sigue vigente y operativo, nutrido de hijos, nietos y bisnietos y de simpatizantes que pretenden apoyar la difusión de los grandes valores que fueron la base de su nacimiento y que hoy también están reconocidos en la Constitución republicana, nacida a raíz de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la liberación de la dictadura.
Se presta especial atención a las generaciones más jóvenes y en particular a los estudiantes que no han conocido los dramas de la guerra: de hecho, en el Auditorio de la Sede Nacional en Piazza Adriana. 3 Roma, se realizan encuentros temáticos en los que participan escuelas de todos los niveles. También se realizan investigaciones históricas, convenciones, congresos, seminarios, eventos culturales y se organizan actividades a través de publicaciones, revistas, libros, películas, casetes destinados a difundir en el territorio nacional y en el exterior el conocimiento del sacrificio sufrido por los mutilados y discapacitados de guerra italiana y de los grandes valores ideales que las animaban.
La idea de constituir una Fundación, con el objetivo de no dispersar el inmenso patrimonio de ideales, valores y testimonios del que son portadores los mutilados y los inválidos de guerra, se materializó en 1995 durante el debate que se desarrolló durante el Congreso de Sorrento, que marcó la transición a la fase de implementación del proyecto. En abril de 1997, el congreso de Milán expresó la voluntad unánime de crear la Fundación de la Asociación Nacional entre Mutilados e Inválidos de Guerra y la decisión final se tomó con motivo del congreso de Chianciano en mayo de 2000, cuya ceremonia de apertura tuvo lugar en la presencia del Jefe de Estado Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. En Chianciano se aprobó el estatuto de la Fundación, cuyo reconocimiento legal (febrero de 2002) consagró definitivamente su nacimiento.
