In this plaque at the entrance we can see that belongs to an UNESCO heritage place and the history:

EN:"The Historical Museum of Senegal is located on the island of Gorée. It is devoted to the history of Senegal, from prehistory to the present day. It is an extension of the former AOF Historical Museum, fitted out by IFAN in 1954 in the Maison Victoria Albis. The building was built between 1852 and 1856, shortly before the founding of Dakar, to plans by engineer captain Pinet-Laprade. First called "Batterie du Nord", the fort then took the name of Jean d'Estrées, the French vice-admiral who had recaptured the island from the Dutch in 1677. For nearly a hundred years, the fort never had to repel any attack, before taking part in the defense of Dakar, in September 1940. Finally disarmed and dismantled in 1950, it was transformed into an annex of the Dakar prison. In 1977, the prison itself was decommissioned and the building transformed into a museum. Its inauguration took place in 1989, on the occasion of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of IFAN."
