I noticed this knocker mainly because of the bright red door. The knocker itself is a depiction of an angels face and wings. The knocker is made from metal (probably iron). 2 (?) peepholes on the door... strange.

About Mechelen:
"Mechelen originated as a settlement around an estate that was donated in 1215 by Hendrik III , duke of Limburg , to the Order of St. John . In the 14th century the lordship came into the possession of the lord of Wittem , but part of the village, together with the Commandery of the Order, remained an enclave within the lordship. In 1579 and 1588 the monastery and the farm were destroyed by fire, after which the Johannites left for Aachen in 1588 . They have since leased their farm. All this came to an end in 1796. Mechelen became the capital of the municipality of Wittem, until it was abolished at the end of 1998 to form the municipality together with Gulpen .Gulpen-Wittem .

In 1803, Mechelen split off from the parish of Wahlwiller as an independent parish . In the years that followed, Mechelen gradually became a ribbon village, while in the second half of the 20th century several residential areas were also created south of the core."
