One of the most famous and therefore visited attractions of Romania is the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. There are several of these within a radius of a few dozen kilometers. One of the most beautiful ones is the St. George Church in the Voronet Monastery. It is especially mentioned in the book, because it is probably the most famous within these monasteries. The main color of the church is the so-called "Voronet blue", which is obtained from lapis lazuli (a deep-blue rock). In Romania it is often called the "Sistine Chapel of the East". The monastery was built in 1488 by Stephen the Great to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Vaslui. The facade is covered with (mainly blue) paintings. One long side has unfortunately suffered from the effects of the weather over the last few hundred years, but the other side is still beautiful and impressive. And the inside of the church is also completely covered with paintings that fortunately are in much better condition.
