Vattenbrunn - Mariehamn, Åland Islands - Draw Wells on Waymarking.com

[EN] Old draw well on Sjöpromenaden, near ÅSS building. Gazebo with nice old time decorations, but this gazebo has been made later than actually well. There is still original base of well from 1884. IT has been reinforced with concrete and lid on top prevents anyone to fall into it.

Depth is 13 meters and this is situated very near of the sea. This well also served for the spa situated on same place.
According The Wikipedia it says: "In 1889, a bathhouse was founded in Mariehamn, and spa life was lively until the outbreak of the First World War, when it almost ended. The spa hotel burned down in 1916. The spa was located north of Västerhamn and the names Badhusparken and Badhusberget remind you of it." [Source: Wikipedia] (visit link)

People used to get water for their coffee from this well. But on 1930's water came polluted and well was closed. Now people hope that City of Mariehamn will clean whole well to get it operational again.

Nowadays there can be get water on side of well, but it is actually tap-water!

There is no old pictures of this well as working. Spa consumes lot of water and would need pumping system, however later when the actual spa was burnt, there was need for draw well with buckets to get water from deep hole.
