The Solar Calendar is a 2003 sculpture by Steve Murillo and Terry Corbett. The rocks track the sun’s location by aligning the stones at sunset, sunrise, and at local noon on the first day of each of the four seasons. Corbett is a ceramic artist and put the art on the tiles. He said Steve had the idea for the solar calendar and then checked with an astronomy professor at WSU to figure it out.
The three (3) larger stones display amazing mosaic artwork. The large brown one depicts the round Mayan calendar. The large mostly yellow one in an old world map showing shipping a navigational routes.
Finally the mostly blue mosaic shows several astrological signs and paths of many objects in space. In total there are five (5) specific constellations. The largest constellations in the center right of the mosaic is Sagittarius - The Archer. This is the 9th sign of the zodiac and is the symbol for those people born between November 22 to about December 21. Sagittarius, the half human and half horse, is the centaur of mythology. His zodiac symbol also known as the archer is shown holding a bow with arrow drawn.
The other constellations include Cygnus - the swan in the upper left corner. Aquila - the eagle in the top right corner. Canis Major - the great dog to the lower left, and Delphinus - the dolphin.
