"El Castillo de Jijona ( Xixona, en valenciano), es conocido por el nombrela Torre Grossa, que no siendo su torre principal, le da nombre en la actualidad a la fortaleza. Esta torre está situada el norte de la fortificación, que se encuentra en la zona más elevada de la ciudad alicantina de Jijona, famosa por la fabricación de turrones y helados, en la comarca de L´Alacantí. Si venimos desde la localidad de Tibi, nos encontramos la entrada a la fortaleza nada más llegar a la población. Si llegamos a Jijona desde Alicante, hay que seguir las indicaciones que hay en la población para llegar al castillo.
Los orígenes de la población de Jijona son inciertos y existe la posibilidad de que se remontasen a tiempos muy antiguos. No obstante, la primera confirmación de la existencia del asentamiento humano se debe al establecimiento de los límites del obispado de Denia, atribuido al rey Wamba, que cita la población y castillo de Xexona, topónimo que se identifica con la actual Jijona o Xixona.
El origen del castillo, tal vez anterior a la ocupación árabe, se reconoce como almohade del siglo XII, por su semejanza con los de Tibi o Bañeres de Mariola.
Jaime I el Conquistador recuperó el castillo y la ciudad en el año 1.258, participando sus habitantes posteriormente en la toma del castillo de Alicante.
En 1.337 Jijona ya era una villa y tenía representación en las cortes valencianas de Pedro II. Sería esta rey quien realizaría importantes reformas y restauraciones en el castillo sobre el año 1.338.
Pedro el Cruel lo conquistó en el año 1.364, siendo recuperado más tarde para la corona de Aragón mediante una cuantiosa tropa que en gran parte provenía de las poblaciones vecinas a esta comarca.
Durante la Guerra de Sucesión, la villa se declaró partidaria del rey Felipe V. En octubre de 1.706 las fuerzas del archiduque Carlos sitiaron el castillo, obligando a sus moradores a la rendición. No obstante, con parte de las fuerzas fieles a Felipe V que habían huido de la fortaleza y algunos refuerzos procedentes de Villena, el castillo fue recuperado nuevamente para la causa borbónica.
Al finalizar la guerra, y motivado por la fidelidad demostrada por la villa, el rey Felipe V le otorgó diversos privilegios y le dio el título de ciudad. Entre los privilegios se contó con la donación del castillo y sus propiedades al ayuntamiento de la localidad, efectuado en 1.706.
A partir de aquí, el castillo fue cayendo en sucesivo deshuso, y los habitantes de Jijona aprovecharon sus materiales para la construcción de nuevas viviendas en el auge de la ciudad, quedando en el transcurso de los años en plena ruina.
Su privilegiada situación, en orientación y altura, le permitía vigilar toda la llanura que se extiende hacia Alicante capital, y hasta incluso, el cabo de Santa Pola.
Ha sido restaurado en muy diversas zonas y a lo largo de muy distintas épocas, acciones de las cuales se encuentran restos muy evidentes en la fábrica de la fortaleza.
En la actualidad se distingue un doble recinto amurallado de mampostería en aparejo opus incertum, destacando, sobre todo la torre situada al norte de la fortaleza, la Torre Grossa, que aunque no lo parezca, no se trata de la torre del homenaje del castillo, sino de una torre de defensa más con la que contaba la construcción. Podéis observar la disposición general de la fortificación en época medieval.
la Torre Grossa, de planta cuadrada y de imponente aspecto sólido, con unos dieciséis metros de altura, aunque con aspecto de semirruina.
En todo el perímetro actual del castillo se observan diversos restos de lienzos de murallas así como de las antiguas torres de defensa, diseminados por todo el recinto amurallado.
Sin duda, y dentro de su estado general de ruina, el Castillo de la Torre Grossa debió ser en sus tiempos una fortaleza de primer orden en la provincia de Alicante".
