The "Palatul Vulturul Negru" (Black Eagle Palace) at the intersection Piata
Unirii 2-4, Str. Independentei nr. 1, in Oradea is one of the most beautiful
buildings of this town. The facade has so many details and it seems the building
has been renovated not long ago.
"Palatul Vulturul Negru (Black Eagle Palace)
The Black Eagle Palace is a representative architectural monument of
Oradea.
The palace, located at 1 Independentei Street, was built between 1907
and 1908 by the Oradea architects Marcell Komor and Dezso Jakab, in the
Secession style. The contractor was Ferenc Sztarill.
The building is a corner building with a high ground floor and four
storeys, consisting of two buildings between which there is a glazed passage
with access to Independentei Street, Unirii Square and Vasile Alecsandri
Street. The main facade facing Unirii Square is asymmetrical, consisting of
two large, unequal buildings that best reveal the Secession style. The
facade of the building on Independentei Street is more orderly and sober.
The central motif is a projecting body, divided into two registers, ending
in a trilobed attic with a stained glass window in the tympanum. The
stained-glass window with the black eagle, which has become an emblem of the
ensemble, was made in 1909 in the Neumann K. Neumann workshop in Oradea.
The Black Eagle Palace is the most important building of its style in
Oradea. The building is multifunctional, comprising, at the time of its
inauguration, a casino, hotel, offices, restaurant, grouped in three
asymmetrical buildings. Today, many clubs, cafes, restaurants and Digi
offices operate in the building, making it an important meeting place for
Oradea's social scene."
