The Museum's website (visit link) informs us:

"The building that houses the National Museum of Modern Art of Guatemala was built by architect Roberto Moreno and inaugurated in 1939. Its central coffered ceiling is in Mudejar style, formed by natural mahogany octagons with bronze rosettes at the heart of its design. From the central part of the ceiling hangs a wrought iron lamp of 2.50 meters in diameter with 96 luminaires. Its terrace, with clear Spanish influence, has wooden beams decorated with paint, encapsulated by 52 windows that surround the architectural complex. This terrace can be visited once a year, during: "A night in the street of museums", an event that offers the opportunity to admire the whole in all its splendor.

Originally called the National Museum of History and Fine Arts, as an institution, it was inaugurated in the old temple of Calvary, on January 15, 1935. In 1968 the Museum of Fine Arts moved to room No. 6, Finca La Aurora zone 13, where it is currently located. It is until October 16, 1975, that the Museum of History and Fine Arts, took the name of "National Museum of Modern Art of Guatemala". Back then, the museum was part of the Institute of Anthropology and History of the Vice Ministry of Culture of the Ministry of Education, which today is known as the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Today the Museum remains the central jewel of Guatemala's modern art. Its collection exemplifies the wide range of expression of modernity in the country, in the period from 1900 to 2000. In 1999 by Ministerial Agreement number 428-99, it is called National Museum of Modern Art "Carlos Mérida", taking into account that Master Carlos Mérida was one of the main exponents of modern Guatemalan visual arts and one of the greatest and most talented protagonists in the history of art in Latin America. Mérida stood out as a painter, muralist, but his great skills in architectural integration and cultural planning are also known, as well as his creative vitality in the broad sense. His conceptual and human legacy compete with the majesty of his works. That is why the Museum is honored to bear the name of Carlos Mérida, as the key voice of Guatemala's cultural heritage, in the artistic language of the twentieth century.

Currently the Museum has three spaces dedicated to the Visual Arts: The Permanent Exhibition Hall, which protects as national heritage, a chronology of one hundred years of Guatemalan works of art; the Carlos Mérida Room, dedicated exclusively to the work of the master and the Temporary Exhibition Hall, which is an active space, an open window to national and international contemporaneity and its various artistic manifestations."
