A pair of compasses have been a symbol for architecture since the Middle Ages. That is why the Limburg designer Maurice Mentjens made a huge pair of compasses for the Cuypershuis. As a tribute to the famous Roermond architect Pierre Cuypers, and to the many designers and architects who lived and worked in Roermond over the centuries.

The signal red steely pair of compasses is 9m (30ft) high. A usual pair of compasses is only +/- 12cm (0,4ft) high.
