Dating to Medieval times, the Major Synagogue was one of five ancient Jewish houses of worship in the Gothic district of Barcelona, Spain. Also known as the Synagogue of Shlomo ben Abraham Ibn Adre, it was "lost" following the attacks against Barcelona’s Jewish community on August 5, 1391, after which the building and all of the community’s belongings passed into the hands of the king. It is one of the oldest in Europe and, at the end of the 20th century, the last one to be discovered.
Historian Jaume Riera i Sans provided the beginning steps to discover the site in 1987 with his research. "This study led Mr. Miguel Iaffa to investigate the visible exterior of the site of the current building and found that it still complied with the demand of the "Tosefta" that one of the fronts was facing Jerusalem with two windows that let light pass through the Holy City.
At the end of 1995 the former owner put on sale the property that was originally intended for Bar. In the face of this deplorable situation Mr. Miguel Iaffa made the decision to acquire it to try to bring to light its historical past and preserve it from a use little worthy of its previous long history." Major Synagogue with the guided hands of our staff offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of the Jewish community of Barcelona. The Jewish neighborhoods, Major Call and Minor Call, are located in the heart of the medieval city. Call is the name given to the Jewish quarters in Catalonia, the origin is found in the Hebrew word cahal which means community. The neighborhoods were closed in 1275, 50 years after the official law in one of the canons of the IV Lateran Council, but were not ghettos. They were under the protection of the king. Barcelona came to have five Synagogues in medieval times, Major Synagogue was the main and the oldest one. Major Synagogue offers cultural routes where the visitors can get lost in the narrow and labyrinthine streets, each corner transports us to a time of wisdom, of illustrious people that influenced the knowledge of current Judaism and takes us from the most glorious point of the Jewish community to the darker times of the Black Death, the pogroms and the Inquisition.

The rescued and renovated synagogue is open for guided tours, typically Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 18:30, and Sunday from 10:30 to 15:00; closed on Saturdays and several holidays. Contact the site for current hours. Private religious services are available, too.

Coneguda també com a Sinagoga de Shlomo ben Abraham Ibn Adre, es va "perdre" arran dels atacs contra la comunitat jueva de Barcelona el 5 d'agost de 1391, després dels quals l'edifici i tots els béns de la comunitat van passar a mans del rei. Barcelona va arribar a tenir cinc sinagogues a l'època medieval, la Sinagoga Major era la principal i la més antiga. La Sinagoga Major ofereix rutes culturals on el visitant es pot perdre pels carrers estrets i laberíntics, cada racó ens transporta a una època de saviesa, de personatges il·lustres que van influir en el coneixement del judaisme actual i ens transporta des del punt més gloriós del jueu. comunitat als temps més foscos de la pesta negra, els pogroms i la Inquisició.

La sinagoga rescatada i renovada està oberta per a visites guiades, normalment de dilluns a divendres a partir de les 10: 30 a 18:30, i diumenge de 10:30 a 15:00; tancat els dissabtes i diversos festius.
