San Cristoforo fue seleccionada como cementerio en 1807, cuando la ocupación francesa decretó que era insalubre enterrar cadáveres en tierra firme. El canal que separaba ambas islas fue rellenado en 1836. Los cuerpos eran llevados en góndola pasados los funerales, y en él están enterrados Ígor Stravinski, Joseph Brodsky, Serguéi Diáguilev, Ezra Pound, Luigi Nono, Christian Andreas Doppler, Franco Basaglia y Zoran Mušic.El cementerio se usa todavía.

La capilla, llamada de San Cristoforo e della Misericordia, no se tiene mucha información, tan solo que podría datarse en el sighlo XV.
