El Beato nació en Agullent el 12 de diciembre de 1898. Con diez años ingresó en el Colegio de San José de Valencia. Posteriormente, estudió en el seminario de la misma ciudad. Se doctoró en Filosofía, Teología y Derecho Canónico en la Universidad Pontificia Gregoriana de Roma. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1922 y el arzobispo Reig y Casanova le nombró profesor del seminario de Valencia. Cuando monseñor Enrique Reig fue creado cardenal y nombrado arzobispo de Toledo, se llevó consigo a Ricardo Plá como secretario, cargo que desempeñó hasta la muerte del cardenal en 1927.
A partir de entonces, Plá Espí fue nombrado profesor y secretario de Estudios de la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad Pontificia de Toledo, capellán mozárabe de la Catedral Primada y consiliario del Centro de Toledo de la ACdP.
El 24 de julio de 1936, Ricardo Plá fue detenido junto a sus padres y su hermana Consuelo. Esta explicaría años más tarde cómo fueron colocados los cuatro ante el paredón de fusilamiento y cómo en ese momento, un joven vestido de miliciano interpuso su cuerpo al del sacerdote, al tiempo que gritaba “¿qué vais a hacer, bárbaros? Este cura es un santo. De los cuatro respondo yo”.
Con este gesto consiguió que se les pusiese en libertad, pero días después fueron de nuevo a por él. Antes de salir de su casa, Ricardo Plá se dirigió a su madre y le dijo: “madre, ¿usted no me ha criado para el cielo? Pues ésta es la hora. No merecía yo tanto. Dios me premia con largueza al concederme la palma del martirio”. Se lo llevaron al toledano paseo del Tránsito y allí lo fusilaron, dándole un tiro de gracia en la frente y otro en el costado. El 28 de octubre de 2007, Benedicto XVI lo elevó a los altares. Su festividad litúrgica es el 6 de noviembre.

On July 24, 1936, Ricardo Plá was arrested along with his parents and his sister Consuelo. This would explain years later how the four were placed before the firing squad and how, at that moment, a young man dressed as a militiaman interposed his body with that of the priest, while shouting “what are you going to do, barbarians? This priest is a saint. Of the four I answer ”.
With this gesture he managed to get them released, but days later they went after him again. Before leaving his house, Ricardo Plá turned to his mother and said: “Mother, haven't you raised me for heaven? Well, this is the hour. I didn't deserve so much. God rewards me generously by granting me the palm of martyrdom." They took him to the Paseo del Tránsito in Toledo and there they shot him, giving him a coup de grace in the forehead and another in the side. On October 28, 2007, Benedict XVI elevated him to the altars. His liturgical feast day is November 6.
