Gerhard Mercator spent part of his youth in Gangelt from 1512 to probably 1518. The most important geographer of the 16th century. He was the first to construct maps on which the course of a ship could be plotted as a straight line. His knowledge of how to conformally transfer the spherical earth to a flat map is still used today. The overarching coordinate system is known as the UTM system and is created using the universal Mercator projection.
