The grave marker for W. H . and Ina Axton is topped with a life-sized horse, indicating her love for riding. Ina died at just twenty-four years of age; W. H. lived to be fify-two. It appears that the monument was erected for Ina, and his information (just the name and years) was added at his death thirty years later.
The riderless horse is depicted as on all fours; in military statues, this tradition indicates a death outside of battle but may just be coincidence here. According to
this web page this horse was carved from Green River limestone by master carver Ira Correll of the Reavis and Beloat Marble Works at Princeton, Indiana. The statue was modelled after a Kentucky-bred horse. The entire monument is twelve feet high, from the bottom of the base to the top of the horse's head.
