EN: The "Royal Deux-Ponts" regiment was founded as a joint infantry regiment by the French king and Duke Christian IV of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld around 1757 after a friendship bond had been sealed. As a so-called foreign regiment, it consisted almost exclusively of German soldiers and comprised 2000 men.
In March 1780, the regiment was assigned to the Franco-German Expeditionary Force, which was to support the American side in the War of Independence. Under the commanders Christian and Wilhelm von Zweibrücken, they reached America in July 1780 and were ordered to besiege the fortress around Yorktown from September, since General Cornwallis's troops were staying there and an evacuation was to be prevented. With the capture of Redoubt #9 in the night of October 14/15, 1781 by the Royal Deux-Ponts regiment, a central defensive position fell, the attempt to evacuate the defenders by water failed due to bad weather and Cornwallis had to admit defeat . Following the surrender, the independence of the former British colonies was recognized in the Peace of Paris in 1783. The Regiment Royal Deux-Ponts returned to Zweibrücken in 1783 and was renamed "99e régiment d'infanterie" in 1791.
To honor the Franco-German regiment and to commemorate their involvement in gaining American independence, the Rhineland-Palatinate Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution installed a bronze plaque at the entrance to the Zweibrücken State Stud on October 29, 2022 .
