Okay. The statue by Reynaldo Rivera was dedicated in 1991 and was from the beginning controversial, to say the least. Oñate arrived in this part of New Mexico as the first Spanish governor and upon arriving (1598) immediately expropriated the arable land from the Pueblos and set up his capital, San Juan de los Caballeros, nearby. The name of the Pueblo was changed to San Juan Pueblo at that time and it was only in 2006 that the name was changed back to Ohkay Owingeh. A revolt at nearby Acoma Pueblo in 1599 resulted in Oñate's ordering some sort of retaliation that has come down through history and the Pueblo oral tradition as the amputation of one foot from the males in Acoma. So . . . . one dark and stormy night someone . . .. (see me in private for my opinion) . . .... someone hacksawed a foot off the statue. The sculptor was called up and provided anopther foot that was welded on. Well I'm out of time, gotta run to Pathetics practice. eeeee
