Debuted in 1914 on the grounds of the opulent Beaux-Arts style
Marble House Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, this once privately owned Chinese Tea House played host to Women's Suffrage events in the early part of the 20th century. Based on the styles and designs of traditional Chinese architecture by architect Richard Morris Hunt for Alva (Vanderbilt) Belmont, construction began in 1913. Hunt went to China to research the project and found inspiration in 12th century Song Dynasty temple buildings with upswept eave ends and guardian animal figures. The building is behind the mansion, at the east end of the property, set above
The Cliff Walk and overlooking the ocean.
It is now open to tour visitors and Preservation Society members.
