1974 was the year of Navnirman Andolan, a series of events led mostly by students and middle-class elements economic crisis and corruption in public life. It was in this context that on the 2nd March 1974 police officers opened fire in Dhal Ni Pol, ine of the historical neighborhoods of Ahmedabad and as a result a sparrow which was by a windows got killed. This historical marker is a homage to the little animal, which comes naturally if one considers the esteem that birds have amongst the citizens of Ahmedabad..

The inscription is both in Gujarat language and in English:

"During the 1974 Roti Ramktian (Navnirrnan Movement) ih on 02-03-1974, 5:25 pm, an innocent sparrow was killed here ih I reckless police firing"
