La construcción de esta iglesia se llevó a cabo durante un momento en el que en Italia se estaba produciendo una renovación artística motivada por el humanismo que se había desarrollado en el país y, sobre todo, en ciudades como Florencia. Es por ello que, la iglesia de Trinatá dei Monti comenzó a construirse entre 1502 y 1519 en un estilo gótico, pero a mediados del siglo XVI se le añadió la actual fachada decorada con dos campanarios en estilo renacentista, obra de los arquitectos Giacomo della Porta y Domenico Fontana.
El levantamiento de esta obra fue patrocinado por el rey de Francia Carlos VIII quien donó a la Orden de los Mínimos el área sobre el que está edificada que tradicionalmente ha estado ligado a Francia. Es por ello que la iglesia de Trinità dei Monti pertenece a los Establecimientos Piadosos de Francia en Roma y su gestión y mantenimiento corresponde al Estado Francés.
Sin embargo, aunque hoy en día está muy bien comunicada con el resto de la ciudad, durante años esta iglesia estuvo aislada en lo alto de la colina. La famosa escalinata que une Piazza Spagna y que hoy en día es imposible de desasociarla con la iglesia es muy posterior. De la misma manera que la parte superior era de tradición francesa, la zona baja era de tradición española, de ahí viene el nombre de la plaza. La escalinata fue creada en 1725 para celebrar la unión entre ambos países tras la Guerra de Sucesión Española.
Visitar la Iglesia
La iglesia se encuentra abierta al público y su interior impresiona tanto como su exterior. Al haberse iniciado durante el gótico, la planta se compone de una sola nave con siete capillas a cada lado. Los visitantes tan sólo podrán visitar una parte de la iglesia, pues a dos tercios de la nave se levanta una reja que limita el acceso al altar y a varias capillas que solo se abren para el culto.
Las capillas son de muy diferentes estilos y ornamentos, pues podemos observar frescos y pinturas realizadas la gran mayoría en el siglo XVI, pero también algunas más recientes del siglo XIX. Entre ellos podemos destacar los frescos de Naldini sobre San Juan Bautista, la famosa Asunción de 1541 de Daniele da Volterra, discípulo de Miguel Ángel, en una de las primeras capillas, los frescos del florentino Perin del Vaga o los monumentos funerarios de la Capilla de los Orsini, importante familia italiana. Pero lo más recomendable es que os deis un paseo por las capillas y disfrutéis del arte que inunda esta iglesia.
El entorno de Trinitá dei Monti
La iglesia dei Trinità dei Monti se encuentra en un emplazamiento destacado de Roma, justo en el centro de la ciudad. Bajando la famosa escalinata, nos encontraremos en la concurrida Piazza de Spagna y en la zona comercial de la ciudad. Multitud de tiendas de lujo se reparten por Via Condotti convirtiéndola en uno de los destinos predilectos para los amantes de la moda.

In the same way that the upper part was of the French tradition, the lower area was of the Spanish tradition, hence the name of the square. The stairway was created in 1725 to celebrate the union between the two countries after the War of the Spanish Succession.
Visit the church
The church is open to the public and its interior is as impressive as its exterior. Having begun during the Gothic period, the plan consists of a single nave with seven chapels on each side. Visitors will only be able to visit a part of the church, since two thirds of the nave rises a fence that limits access to the altar and several chapels that are only open for worship.
The chapels are of very different styles and ornaments, as we can see frescoes and paintings, most of them done in the 16th century, but also some more recent from the 19th century. Among them we can highlight the frescoes by Naldini on Saint John the Baptist, the famous Assumption of 1541 by Daniele da Volterra, a disciple of Michelangelo, in one of the first chapels, the frescoes by the Florentine Perin del Vaga or the funerary monuments of the Chapel of the Orsini, an important Italian family. But the most recommendable thing is that you take a walk through the chapels and enjoy the art that floods this church.
