A granite mounting block or upping stock adjoining the lovely old Church House Walkhampton. To the left of Church House is this good example of a Kissing Gate (see photo)

There are many of these still to be seen, having been used to aid a horseman or horsewoman to mount their horse. THE CHURCH HOUSE dates from 1598, but is actually on an older site. Monks probably sheltered here after traversing High Dartmoor on their way to Tavistock. Until 1855 it was an Inn.
