This is one of two gasometers that are all that remains from the Manchester Corporation Gasworks that was built on the on the northern edge of the former Bradford Colliery.

The colliery, gasworks, Stuart Street Power Station, Philips Park Press, Richard Johnson's Wireworks, Francis Shaw's Engineering and Clayton Aniline all formed a site of heavy industry on the eastern side of Manchester, one of the first industrial cities in the world.

The site was situated close to the Ashton Canal and also a railway and was only 2 miles away from the city centre and was so ideally situated.

The gasmeter had a diameter of 153 feet and a storage capacity of 7,000,000 cubic feet.

The discovery of gas in the North Sea from the 1960s saw the gas industry in towns across the country go into decline, along with the usefulness of gasholders, with most gas being transported via high pressure pipes.

That means the inner chambers are no longer used and just the iconic wrought iron frames remain.

The nearby coal mine closed in in 1968 and by 1975 a large part of the area had become derelict and unused.

The Commonwealth Games

The area was transformed when the land was used to build sports stadiums and facilities for the XVII Commonwealth Games in 2002. The Athletics stadium was then converted to a football stadium and is now home to Manchester City Football Club, other sports stadiums and facilities have been built and the area is now known as Sportcity and the area has the most dense concentration of sports facilities in Europe.

This gasometer is on the edge of car park B used for many of these stadiums.
