Este emplazamiento tiene su origen en el Patio de Comedias que pertenecía en el siglo XV al convento de San Francisco.

Sobre ese lugar se sitúa hoy el Teatro Principal de Palencia que tiene su origen a principios de siglo XIX cuando se edifica siguiendo el estilo de los teatros italianos de finales del siglo XVII.

Fue re-inaugurado el 2 de julio de 1837 después de las importantes obras que comenzaron en 1831 y que se ejecutaron por un incendio en 1826 que destruyó buena parte del inmueble, a excepción de los muros. Tuvo como arquitecto principal al arquitecto municipal Martín de Meabe. La nueva estética del teatro, de corte neoclásica, destaca por los elementos modernistas que muestra la fachada.

En la actualidad, el Teatro Principal, conocido popularmente como "La Bombonera" por su bello y coqueto aspecto, constituye el epicentro de la actividad escénica de la ciudad.

Su programación estable se abre a espectáculos de artes escénicas (danza y teatro), creaciones para público infantil y propuestas musicales. Con un aforo de 420 localidades, es sede —desde hace más de cuatro décadas cada mes de septiembre— del Festival de Teatro Ciudad de Palencia, uno de los certámenes más antiguos de nuestro país.
