The Kirkwall Lifeboat House, a.k.a. the Kirkwall Lifeboat Station, was opened on 14th July 1990 by Her Royal Highness the the Princess Royal which is title given to Princess Anne. The building is located at the West Pier in Kirkwall Harbor.

The Kirkwall Lifeboat House was established in 1972 as an addition to of Scotland’s coastal rescue services. Their mission is to save lives at sea. The station houses the crew of the Severn Class Royal Navy Lifeboat Margaret Foster that serve the marine community of Orkney. "The Severn class is a fine sea-keeping lifeboat – excellent for the kind of offshore, long jobs we sometimes face. She can handle the toughest weather. She’s very manoeuvrable too, which is essential for situations where you need to be alongside a casualty." Link The RNLB Margaret Foster is located on West Pier opposite the Lifeboat House. To date the crews have been awarded three medals for gallantry during rescue operations.
A round plaque embedded on the front of the building is inscribed:

The Princess Royal is the title given to the Princess Anne, eldest daughter of Queen Elizabeth II. She officiated at the opening of the Kirkwall Lifeboat House. Princess Anne of Edinburgh was born to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on August 15, 1950 at the Clarence House, London. She has held the title of Princess Royal since 1987 and is the 7th person to hold that title.
In addition to her official duties as a member of the royal family she is an accomplished equestrian. She is the first member of the British royal family to compete in the Olympic Games in 1988. Princess Anne is a member of the International Olympic Committee.
