Sonargaon, also known as Panam Nagar, is a ghost town located in the surroundings of Dhaka, the big city and capital of Bangladesh.

Once a glorious capital of an independente kingdom, the town became later a resort for wealthy traders who developed a beautiful place with rich houses designed by the best architects and well ornamentaded by competent artisans. Economy developed based in the cotton trade and the place was a symbol of prosperity.

As it often happens with information about Bangladesh, research is not easy, little is available online and often there is opposing info. The reasons of the abandonment of the town is therefore not clear. Some sources indicate the riots and violence of the Partition of 1947, some other mention the tensions amidtst the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War. Also a big fire is cited.

Nowadays it's possible to visite the site. There is a nearby town from where you can walk to the ghost town. Consult the following blog article for that:
