The donor for this sculpture was a trustee of the University and avid sports enthusiast, had made a sizable donation to be used as the University wanted. A board decided to have the bear sculpture made to stand in front of the University's newly expanded athletic facility. This decision became controversial because many did not see the need to spend that much money on arts when so many other things were needed. The donor then withdrew his donation and had the sculpture commissioned on his own and donated the sculpture and it continues to stand in front of the Francis Gymnasium, one of the sites of the 1904 Summer Olympics.
