In het Azië-deel van Blijdorp is ook een overdekt gedeelte. Daar stond ik oog en oog met de supergrote komodo-varaan Komo. Gelijk zat hij wel achter glas en betrof het hier een afgietsel. Het was de eerste komodo-varaan die in Blijdorp kwam. Hij is in 1996 overleden op 13-jarige leeftijd.

Komo is terug in Blijdorp! In 1996 overleed het volwassen Komodovaraan-mannetje Komo. Na zijn dood werd de Komodovaraan uitgeleend aan het Museum Alexander König in Bonn, waar men van Komo een elastisch " negatief" van kunsthars maakte. Van dit zogenaamde negatief zijn vervolgens levensechte afgietsels vervaardigd. Het resultaat is geweldig. Komo meet van kop tot staartpunt maar liefst twee meter en 65 centimeter en is in lopende houding vereeuwigd. Komo komt in het voorjaar in de Maleise bosrand te staan.

Komo is back in Blijdorp! In 1996, the adult Komodo dragon male Komo died.
