Pari Bibi was the daughter of Shaista Khan, an influential ruler and the Mughal governor of Bengal. She died at a young age and her father was so sad that he stopped the construction of Lalbagh fort and ordered the mausoleum to be built roughly in the center of the grounds already walled. Other sources mention that the mausoleum was build under the command of prince Azam, to whom she was suppused to marry (and who became the Mughal emperor).

The mausoleum was built in 1678. Since 1974 the site has been managed by the Department of Archaeology.
