The sign reads: "First ideas and observations of the separation of the Baja California Peninsula from the continental mass.

The chronicles of Old California written by the missionaries of the Company of Jesus, who were in the peninsula between 1697 and 1767, contains valuable information on the natural history of the region, especially the observations about the configuration of the Golf of California, made by the priest Johann Jakob Baegert, who lived in the Mission of San Luis Gonzaga from 1751 and 1768.

The observations of Bargert were published in 1771 and they talk about the numerous islands, of different sizes, in the Gulf. These characteristics made him suppose that the peninsula had been wider than at the moment or that it was possibly merged with the continental mass and they used to form a single terrestrial mass.

He also compared the Gulf of California with the Red Sea of the Old World and thought about the idea that at sometime the Californian peninsula must have been joined to Sonora.

In 1915, Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist and author of the Hypothesis of Continental Drift (precursory idea of the Theory of the Tectonics of Plates) presented diverse examples to demonstrate that the continents moved, as part of the svientific argument to support his hypothesis.

Among the examples, he in cluded the one of the Gulf of California and the Peninsula of Baja California, places where it was possible to observe the configuration of the coasline in detail."

The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00. The entrance fee is 30 pesos or about 2 USD.
